Our 35th Anniversary Party

And what a party it was!

On September 13th we celebrated the store's 35th anniversary. Pat Doherty opened the doors of Atlantic News in September 1973. Mrs. K. was the first customer through the door and she still comes in every weekend! When we bought the store ten years ago, we celebrated the stores 25th year. It felt kind of funny (we had  been employees for five years before we purchased it) to celebrate such a milestone. This time round, during the six weeks of planning, I realised that Stephen, I and the staff were very much a part of the celebration and that felt great. The party started at 10am and but for a brief lull between 12 & 1 it was fun and busy in here. Colin McRae played piano in the morning and the the J.P. Ellis trio played in the afternoon. It was great fun having those four musicians in as they too are our regular customers. Having the live music was great, we literally had people dancing in the aisles! But boy did we notice the energy levels change when it was finally time to stop the music. Our suppliers were fantastic, we were giving away free magazines, t-shirts, bags, mugs, binoculars, hats, pins, and all kinds of other stuff all day long. We were very touched by some customers who came in with cards of thanks, flowers and a cake for us. It is wonderful to be a part of the neighbourhood and the larger community. That is one of the really interesting things about this job, we get people in here from all walks of life and we are part of their lives. Thanks for that!
